Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre Portugal
The Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre (IWRC) was supported by the Bernd Thies Foundation for many years. In 2012, Grupo Lobo took over the management of the centre.
The IWRC is located about 25 kilometres north of the capital Lisbon in a quiet valley near the famous monastery town of Mafra. The wolf centre has four spacious enclosures of up to 20,000 square metres, which are designed in a species-appropriate way and offer space for up to 25 wolves. Dense forest guarantees protection, optimal hiding places and plenty of shade. In addition, there are clear areas where the wolves can be easily observed on the nature trail. Three smaller enclosures are set up for sick, injured or wolves which have been excluded by the wolf pack.
The IWRC was founded in 1989 by the British journalist and wolf conservationist Robert Lyle. The centre sees itself as a sanctuary both for injured, wild wolves that could no longer survive in the wild and for wolves born in captivity that were not kept in a species appropriate manner.
Since then, the entire infrastructure has been built with funds from the Bernd Thies Foundation. In addition to the enclosures, this includes a visitor centre with, among other things, an exhibition room and a souvenir shop. Two bungalows and another building are available as accommodation for guests and helpers.
