Bernd Thies travelled to numerous countries and regions between 1985 and 1988, including Switzerland, Portugal, Asturias in north-western Spain, the Camargue in France, Abruzzo in Italy, Israel, the Rocky Mountains, the Everglades and Alaska in the USA, Manitoba and Vancouver in Canada, the Arctic Ocean, the Bering Sea, Peru and the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador. As a member of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Tierfotografen e.V. (Society of German Wildlife Photographers), Bernd Thies brought back many impressive animal and landscape photos from his travels.
